DESCRIPTION:Mountain Valley Arts Council will host S. Hazen Guthrie on Saturday\, April 26th from 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM for readings and book signings. This Art Forum will be a great blend of literary and performance arts appropriate for adults and teens with literary interests.\n\nS. Hazen Guthrie is a theatre artist\, specializing in voice and Shakespeare production and training. Guthrie is a lecturer and presenter for the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation – POETRY OUT LOUD.\nShe is listed as an Individual Artist with many state arts councils and has directed and acted for resident theatres across the country\, including Steppenwolf\, Victory Gardens\, and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.\n\nGuthrie may sound familiar to those of you who listen to WLRH Public Radio. Guthrie is a member of Alabama’s Coweeta Poets; the resident poet of ScribeSouth; and\, as a Sundial Writer\, can be heard on WLRH Public Radio Station. She is published in No’Ala\, The Rose in the World\, the 2023 Year in Review: Out Loud Huntsville\, and 52 Weeks of Sun.\n\nGuthrie’s book\, we held our breath the birds and I\, (Finishing Line Press) was just released in September 2024 and will be available for purchase and signing at MVAC.\n\n“In times as fraught and fearful as these\, taking a breath seems both the hardest and most needed thing – in S. Hazen Guthrie‘s new book\, we held our breath\, the birds and I\, Guthrie gives the reader permission and room to breathe. In poems that are often brief\, always observant\, and willing to take a closer look at nature\, God\, and society\, Guthrie creates a haven for deep thought\, mercy\, and the sip of fresh air we all require to face this world\,” said Ashley M. Jones\, AL Poet Laureate\n\nA coalition of writers\, ScribeSouth meets weekly to formally workshop manuscripts and works-in-progress. While our primary goal is to support each other’s writing\, ScribeSouth is actively engaged with a larger writing community well beyond North Alabama and hope to add writing events in the future. For now\, ScribeSouth is striving to bring their best to the page as a band of writers who believe the work is necessary\, perhaps at this point in history as never before.\n\nBooks by other ScribeSouth authors –\nSarah BélangerCourtney GulbroS. DESCRIPTION:Foster\, a favorite will perform on April 24th from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. You might consider them an opener for the Lake Guntersville Merchants’ Spring Fling which starts the next day with a vendor market as well as activities and open house at all the surrounding merchants.\n\nBring your friends\, folding chairs\, and whatever weather gear is appropriate – blanket\, fan\, umbrella (It keeps the rain away) – and enjoy a lovely evening with live music. If bad weather is looming\, check the Mountain Valley Arts Council Facebook page or mvacarts.org/concerts to see if the concert has been moved to Town Hall on Blount Avenue. There will also be a map at Errol Allan Park\, if needed. Concessions will be provided\, and nearby restaurants and bars will be open.\n\nThis original band already shared a love for good music of any kind. Their own sound is a blend of their strong backgrounds in acoustic music\, blues\, country\, bluegrass\, gospel\, and Celtic music. They particularly enjoy older music\, and their acoustic versions of classic tunes bring new life to good memories. Now\, just imagine with two more talented and experienced band members!\nRick Norton from Albertville plays bass\, rhythm guitar\, and sings. Michael Foster plays percussion and flute and lives in Boaz\, and Mitchell Foster originally from Sardis plays guitar\, mandolin\, and sings.
